How to Increase Lung Capacity: What Actually Works

Most people who want to increase their lung capacity actually want better cardiovascular fitness, and the two are not the same. Your lungs' physical size is mostly fixed, and in healthy people the lungs are not what limits performance. What you can genuinely improve is how much oxygen your body can deliver and use, measured by VO2 max, and that responds strongly to aerobic and interval training.

"How do I increase my lung capacity?" is one of the most common fitness questions, and it is built on a misunderstanding. This guide explains what lung capacity really is, why it is rarely your limit, and what actually makes you breathe easier and perform better.

Can You Actually Increase Lung Capacity?

Your total lung capacity, the maximum volume of air your lungs can hold, is largely set by your genetics, height, sex, and age. In healthy adults it changes very little with training. Elite endurance athletes do not have dramatically bigger lungs than untrained people of the same size; what they have is a far better ability to move oxygen from those lungs to their muscles and use it.

So the honest answer is that you cannot meaningfully grow your lungs, but you can transform your usable aerobic capacity. That capacity has a name: VO2 max.

Why Your Lungs Are Rarely the Limit

Here is the key physiology. During hard exercise, the blood leaving your lungs is already almost completely saturated with oxygen, around 97 to 98 percent, even at maximal effort. Your lungs are doing their job with room to spare. Adding more lung volume would not help, because there is no unused oxygen waiting to be loaded.

The real bottleneck sits downstream:

Improve those two, and you improve fitness. This is exactly what VO2 max measures, and it is the strongest single predictor of cardiovascular fitness and long-term health (Mandsager et al., 2018).

What About Breathing Exercises?

Breathing drills and respiratory muscle training, breathing against resistance through a handheld device, do have a real effect: they strengthen the muscles you breathe with and can improve endurance performance, meaning how long you can sustain a hard effort. In short: breathing work can make breathing feel easier, but it does not build a bigger aerobic engine. For that, you train the cardiovascular system.

What Actually Improves Your Usable Oxygen Capacity
