Do Breathing Exercises Increase VO2 Max? What the Research Says
The honest answer: breathing exercises do not meaningfully raise your VO2 max, but they can improve your endurance performance, which is not the same thing. Respiratory muscle training has been shown to help you sustain effort for longer at a given intensity, yet the research does not show it lifting the VO2 max ceiling itself. If your goal is a higher VO2 max, training your cardiovascular system is what moves the number; breathing work is a small supporting act, not the main event.
This topic is full of overclaiming, so it is worth being precise. There are two very different things people mean by "breathing exercises," and only one of them has real evidence behind it, and even that evidence points at performance rather than at VO2 max.
Two Very Different Things
Respiratory muscle training (RMT) means deliberately strengthening the muscles you breathe with, usually by inhaling against resistance through a handheld device for a few minutes a day. This is the version with published research.
General breathing techniques, things like nasal breathing, box breathing, or the Wim Hof method, are the version most people picture. These have value for stress, recovery, and how you feel during exercise, but there is no good evidence that they raise VO2 max. Do not confuse the two.
What the Research Actually Shows
The best summary of respiratory muscle training is a systematic review and meta-analysis of 46 studies in healthy people (Illi et al., 2012). The finding worth internalizing: RMT improved endurance performance, measured by how long subjects could sustain a fixed workload or their time-trial results, not their VO2 max. Constant-load tests improved by around 16 percent on average.
Notice what that outcome is. It is the ability to keep going, not the size of the engine. Your breathing muscles, like any muscle, fatigue during hard exercise, and when they tire they can steal blood flow from your working limbs. Training them to resist fatigue lets you hold a hard pace longer before that happens. That is a real benefit, and it shows up as performance, not as a higher VO2 max reading.
The same review found that less fit people benefit more than trained athletes (Illi et al., 2012), which fits the pattern: if your breathing muscles are a weak link, strengthening them helps; if they are already strong, there is little to gain. A separate meta-analysis in trained athletes reached a similar conclusion, with modest performance benefits and no reliable VO2 max effect (HajGhanbari et al., 2013).
Why Breathing Is Not the Bottleneck
To see why breathing exercises cannot do much for VO2 max, it helps to know what actually limits it. In healthy people at sea level, VO2 max is capped by how much oxygen-rich blood your heart can deliver to your muscles, and how much of that oxygen the muscles can extract. Your lungs are not the limiting factor; a healthy person's blood is already almost fully saturated with oxygen during hard exercise. Breathing harder or with stronger respiratory muscles does not put more oxygen into blood that is already nearly full.
That is the core reason the number does not move much. VO2 max is a heart, blood, and muscle story, and breathing exercises train none of those three. The exception is people whose breathing genuinely is a limiter, such as some patients with lung disease, where respiratory training does more. For a healthy person chasing a higher VO2 max, the ceiling is elsewhere.
Where Breathing Work Is Actually Worth Your Time
None of this makes breathing worthless. It just means aiming it at the right goals:
- Sustaining hard efforts. If your breathing muscles fatigue late in a race or a hard interval session, RMT can genuinely help you hold the pace, exactly what the performance data shows.
- Perceived exertion. Better breathing mechanics can make a given effort feel less punishing, which helps you train more consistently.
- Recovery and stress. Slow breathing techniques shift you toward a recovery state between sessions. Useful for sleep and stress, unrelated to VO2 max.
- Efficient breathing during intervals. Rhythmic, full breaths during hard work help you stay controlled. This is technique, not a VO2 max intervention.
What Actually Raises VO2 Max
If the number is the goal, spend your effort where the research is unambiguous: near-maximal cardiovascular training. Time spent close to your maximum heart rate is what forces the heart and muscles to adapt.
