It rises when you spend time near your maximum, which is exactly what intervals deliver. HIIT is potent for metabolic health, not just fitness. In the original REHIT trial, six weeks of tiny sprint sessions improved insulin sensitivity by 28 percent in men, alongside the VO2 max gains, from just minutes of hard work a week (Metcalfe et al., 2012).
